History
The 76/40 Ansaldo mod. 1917 is an Italian variant of the QF 12-pounder 12-centum weight developed for the Royal Navy to protect their larger ships from torpedo boats. However, during World War I, aircraft started to emerge as the new threat to warships, and anti-aircraft guns needed to be developed to counter them. The QF 12-pounder was already built in Italy under license as the Ansaldo mod.1916 so for an anti-aircraft gun, the Italians just made a new mount for the gun that could reach a 75-degree elevation and retrofitted it on older ships and auxiliary craft in the Regio Marina. Because of the economic rebuilding required for Italy after World War I, and the generally poor state of Italian industry, 730 AA guns were still in service during World War II. The Ansaldo Mod. 1917 used fixed ammunition, and fired a slightly lighter 13.3-pound shell for anti-aircraft use from the 14.3-pound high explosive shells, though it had a slightly lower muzzle velocity of 2,264 feet per second compared to the 2,300 feet per second average velocity of the HE shells.
