History

The Imperial Japanese Army Air Service used the designation Type 89 for two very different machine guns. One of the guns is a fixed mount based on the British Vickers E, known in-game simply as the Type 89. The Type 89 'special' is the name used in-game for the flexible mounted gun which was based on the IJA's Type 11 infantry machine gun for anti-aircraft and rear defense use. While using the same action, the flexible Type 89 is two guns joined together unlike the Type 11, it lacks cooling fins due to the lower temperatures present at altitude, it also has a metal y-shaped stock, spade grips, and is supplied by two 45-round quadrant-shaped pan magazines that share the ability to be topped up by stripper clips like the Type 11. The combined guns offer a rate of fire of 1,400 rounds per minute which is superior to the relatively low 900rpm cyclic rate of the fixed Type 89. However, the guns were heavy and the Japanese would make the lighter Te-4 which was a single Type 11 based design to replace it. The flexible Type 89 saw service with Army Air Sevice's bomber fleet along with the Tachikawa Ki-9 trainer biplane.
