History

A hydraulically recoil operated design created by legendary gunsmith John Moses Browning, the 37 mm gun M4 was first developed for use on aircraft such the P-39 Aircobra and the P-63 Kingcobra. Needing a "barge-buster" weapon for their PT boats, the M4, known as the AN/M4 in naval service, was salvaged from P-39s at Henderson Field on the island of Guadalcanal and mounted on the boats for the Solomon Islands Campaign in 1942. After the success of the M4 in the naval role, the Navy started to standardize these improvised guns, eventually mounting the M9 37 mm gun on PT boats in 1944 which used a more powerful round.
