Comparison with analogues

Give a comparative description of cannons/machine guns that have firepower equal to this weapon.

Usage in battles

Describe the cannon/machine gun in the game - its distinctive features, tactics of usage against notable opponents. Please don't write a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought.

Pros and cons

Summarise and briefly evaluate the weaponry in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark pros and cons as a list.

History

After the Red Army adopted the 61-K, the Red Army Air Force began development of an aircraft cannon firing the same cartridge for the IL-2. Boris Shpitalny at OKB-15 designed the gas-operated, magazine-fed Sh-37 to meet this requirement. Using a less powerful round than the 61-K, the Sh-37 first saw use on a LaGG-3 for flight testing in early 1941. In June it was decided to produce 40 more cannons in 45 days to be trialed against the NS-37 design from OKB-16. The LaGG-3 equipped with this cannon was delivered to the Soviet Air Force in 1942, while in August, the Sh-37 was delivered as a synchronized variant on 22 Yak-7-37s. Capable of punching of a 11 square foot hole in a target, the cannons required the cockpit to be moved closer to the rear for mounting on the Yak-7. It was in mid-1941 when the IL-2 was first fitted with this cannon in under-wing gun pods (a necessity due to the inability to fit ammunition in the wings). Tested during the Battle of Stalingrad, the Sh-37 was found to be capable of defeating the armour of German light and medium tanks, but the recoil would often throw the the plane of course and it was prone to jamming with the paired mountings meaning the IL-2 couldn't fire the gun if one jammed due to the recoil. The design was not mounted on any further aircraft after the field tests in Stalingrad, but it was experimented with in the self-propelled anti-aircraft role with the ZUT-37 which mounts the gun on the chassis of the T-70 light tank. However the design remained a prototype due to the crammed crew compartment.
