Description
The Type T-51b is a rank III Japanese motor torpedo boat
with a battle rating of 2.3 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.89 "Imperial Navy".
General info
Survivability and armour
Talk about the vehicle's armour. Note the most well-defended and most vulnerable zones, e.g. the ammo magazine. Evaluate the composition of components and assemblies responsible for movement and manoeuvrability. Evaluate the survivability of the primary and secondary armament separately. Don't forget to mention the size of the crew, which plays an important role in fleet mechanics. Save tips for preserving survivability in the "Use in battle" section.
If necessary, use a graphics template to show the most well-protected or most vulnerable points in the armour.
Mobility
Write about the ship’s mobility. Evaluate its power and manoeuvrability, rudder rerouting speed, stopping speed at full tilt, with its maximum forward speed and reverse speed.
Armament
Primary armament
Provide information about the characteristics of the primary armament. Evaluate their efficacy in battle based on their reload speed, ballistics and the capacity of their shells.
Broadly describe the ammunition available for the primary armament, and provide recommendations on how to use it and which ammunition to choose.
Torpedo armament
Torpedoes launchers are standard equipment on many ships and boats. Torpedoes are a significant means of defeating an opponent. Evaluate the position of the torpedo launchers, discuss the ammunition available, firing specifics such as dead zones, features of the torpedoes themselves, etc.
Special armament
Depth charges, mines, rocket launchers and missiles are also effective in skilled hands and can take an off-guard opponent by surprise. Evaluate the ammunition of this type of armament and rate its performance in combat.
Usage in battles
Describe the technique of using this ship, the characteristics of her use in a team and tips on strategy. Abstain from writing an entire guide – don’t try to provide a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought. Talk about the most dangerous opponents for this vehicle and provide recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of playing with this vehicle in various modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Pros:
- 4 x torpedoes facing in a forward direction
- Decent speed to move around the map rather quickly
- Gun has excellent rotation speed
Cons:
- Rear gun does not fire in a forward direction, only to the side and rear of the boat
History
The Type Ko MTB (甲型魚雷艇, T-51) is a Japanese large MTB affected by German S-boots.
This group separated with two group: No.10 class MTB (T-51a) and No.11 class MTB (T-51b). Currently model is mix of them.
After complete of No.1 class MTB (T-1), news about activity of S-boot from Europe reached to IJN. They start to design copy of them but they had only simple sketch and one civilian motor boat owned by Mitsui family built by Lürssen (builder of S-boat). In that time they did not had experience to build wood iron mixed large boat, so at first they built one prototype. ("Vessel No.600", later No.10 MTB)
No.600 was laid down in July 1942 by Yokohama Yacht Tsurumi factory and completed November 1943. But by the worsening of the war situation, they started mass-production before the test of prototype. Just after they get official detailed drawings of 95-ft type S-boot. Basically design of T-51 and S-boat was same, but they was much to learn.
In design of No.600, they simplify lots of part but design of S-boot was well-crafted one so those simplify cause several problems. They took measures but stability of vessel was not enough and so there are difficulty in practicality.
For engine, they equip four Mark 71 Model 6 engines (water-cool, 920 HP) and two shafts. It was copy of engine of Italian MAS-451 type. In first ship, two engine connected with one shaft by the Vulcan coupling. It cause increase of weight so it exceeded planned displacement. Planned trial displacement was 84.2 t but actual trial displacement reached 89.6 t and max speed decreased. Because of it, since second boat, they equip four shaft and four engine to abolish Vulcan coupling. They name second ship to T-51b, and first ship be T-51a.
T-51a had one 25 mm twin machine gun and four 45 cm torpedoes, but T-51b had three 25 mm single machine guns and two torpedoes.
No.10, No.13 and No.16 were built at Yokohama yacht Tsurumi factory, but other boats built by new shipyard, Yokohama yacht Choshi factory. Finally 10 Type Ko MTBs were laid down but only 8 boats were completed(No.10 - No.17). Construction of Type Ko was cancelled in August 1944. No.18 was planned to equip small diesel engine but it was not completed. Construction of Type Ko MTBs were delayed because No.11 class MTBs need to resolve problem discovered during the test of No.10 MTB. Also Mk.71 Mod.6 engine required advanced technology and production of engine was delayed.
No.10 MTB was dispatched to Truck island just after completed, but fire broke out and sank due to air raid. Also, No.12 MTB was bring out from Choshi to Yokosuka to equip weapons. But just after completed, she sunk because electric motor spark ignited gasoline and exploded.
Other vessels was deployed at Special Attack corps but most of them did not experience the actual battle. Only one boat deployed at Habu port of Izu Oshima attacked enemy submarine.
Also, No.16 MTB equip only two engine. She used space of other engines for hold and used for tender boat of other small MTBs and midget submarines at Kawadana Assault Corps.
