History
The Vickers-Terni mod.1915/1917 is an Italian licensed version of the 2-pounder Mark II "pom-poms" used by the British Navy. In 1915, the Royal Navy understood the threat aircraft would pose and ordered what became the "pom-poms" to arm their ships of cruiser size and below. A scaled-up version of a design by Sir Hiram Maxim, the design was adopted by the Italians in 1917. Originally, 50 were purchased from the UK before the production license was negotiated with Vickers-Terni. It remained the main production anti-aircraft gun until the 1930s when the Regio Marina (Royal Italian Navy) began looking for a replacement. While the gun was updated as the 40 mm/39 Vickers-Terni mod.1915/1917, Modif.1930, this move was only a stopgap until the locally designed 37 mm/54 Breda Mod.32 was adopted.
