Armament
Primary armament
The primary armament is composed from 4 turrets trinate from 305 mm/46 Armstrong cannon, model 1909, like bullets door SAP and APHE, the first bullets are very useful and cause serious damage to all enemy ships while the second cause serious damage if they are used against weak points of the enemy ships.
Secondary armament
Secondary armament is composed by 4 twin turrets 120mm/50 Armstrong cannon, model 1909, 12 single 120mm/50 Armstrong cannon, 12x 76mm/40 Armstrong cannons, the 120mm are perfect to shoot down light ships like destroyers and small ships while the 76mm can be very useful when you set the IA in anti-air mode so you use all the cannons to destroy enemy planes.
Anti-aircraft armament
This ship as anti-aircraft armament has 4x 76 mm/40 Armstrong cannons and 2x 40 mm/39 Vickers-Terni, the 40 mm have HE-FT but do not have a great potential against aircraft must know many shots before starting to do damage, while the 76 have only APHE useful against small ships but will not do much as an anti-aircraft.
Usage in battles
Being a Dreadnought, with its 305mm cannons can cause great damage to both small ships and enemy BBs, while the secondary 120mm cannons can cause serious damage to light ships, the positive thing about the RN Dante Alighieri is that it can carry anti-aircraft armament composed of 40mm and 76mm.
In battle, use the SAPs because they cause serious damage to enemy ships, easily burning the enemy ship and reducing the crew of the enemy ship in a short time, while the APHE uses them against other BBs or against ships where you know the exact position of their santabarbara.
When aiming with the main cannons at an enemy, stand to the side to make a full salvo against the enemy, and after firing begin to zigzag to avoid enemy shots
The secondary 120mm cannons are perfect for destroying destroyers or small fast approaching ships, for the simple fact that they are present on the belt of the ship and not only the 120mm cannons carry SAP causing incendiary damage to enemies.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Devastating firepower
- Very good SAP and AP of the main cannons
- Very good survivability (970 crew members)
- Sizeable complement
- Better AA protection than other dreadnoughts
- Good armor
- Very good speed and maneuverability compared to other BB
Cons:
- Mediocre anti-aircraft versus fast planes
- Low amount of AA
- Armament potential only when sideways (ship must have main turrets turned towards the side of the ship to make a full salvo)
History
After the construction of HMS Dreadnought, several nations tried to build similar ships which were then classified as Dreadnought, because HMS Dreadnought marked the beginning of the first battleships.
The Italian Navy was still engaged in the construction of fast battleships Vittorio Emanuele class, which did not have a great trend although it was also predicted by a senior officer.
The first Italian Dreadnought was the RN Dante Alighieri, launched in 1910 and designed by the Naval Engineer Edoardo Masdea.
This ship demonstrated numerous technical innovations, among which the disposition of the main armament in trinate towers, it was 4 towers of 305mm, and to ensure maximum performance of each system were arranged on the longitudinal axis, at the beginning was not adopted the system of elevated towers above the main cannons, because at that time there were doubts about that elevated system that was used by the Americans and British.
At the end the RN Dante Alighieri can be considered as a prototype for the following development of the 2 classes Conte di Cavour and Duilio.
