Description
The Pvkan m/43 is in contention for the best mid-calibre tank gun available in War Thunder, offering many advantages over its competition. With its best shell boasting a very high muzzle velocity of 890 m/s and a lethal 110 grams of explosive filler along with solid penetration across the board, this brilliance of Swedish engineering will not disappoint.
Vehicles equipped with this weapon
General info
Available ammunition
- slpprj m/41: A very underwhelming uncapped solid shot with mediocre penetration and poor post-pen damage, although muzzle velocity is still higher than other guns of the type. Replace with the slpgr m/43 as soon as possible.
- slpgr m/43: This APCBC-HE shell is what makes the gun worthwhile. Exceptional muzzle velocity, lethal explosive filler and competitive penetration makes this shell your go-to for almost any situation.
- sgr m/38: Complimentary high explosive shell standard with most mid-calibre weapons. What distinguishes the sgr m/38 is its far higher muzzle velocity, slightly higher penetration and almost double the HE filler of any similar shell. Useful against light vehicles that the slpgr m/43 might over-penetrate.
- 7,5 cm slpprj m/49: Post-war APDS shot available to specifically the Pvkv m/43 (1963). Offers vastly improved penetration and muzzle velocity at the cost of post-pen damage. Although the slpgr m/43 should still be your default shell, the APDS offers better immediate penetration against the more well armoured foes the 1963 model may face at its higher BR. Always recommended to carry at least a few.
Comparison with analogues
As mentioned previously, the Pvkan m/43 is one of the best guns in its class, and can be seen as a well-performing middle ground between its competition. It almost completely outclasses the American M1 (76 mm) and especially the German KwK40 (75 mm), offering similar - although slightly lesser - nuclear capabilities of the Russian ZIS-S-53 (85 mm), higher muzzle velocity than the Japanese Type II Model II (75 mm), can trade punches with the Italian OTO 75/43 mod.40 (75 mm) and has better gun depression than all of them.
However all of these guns, barring the KwK40, have some areas in which they excel at better than the Pvkan m/43 does. The M1 has better ranged penetration and faster reload, the ZIS-S-53 has far better angled armour penetration with a much higher explosive filler, the Type II Model II has less shell drop and higher accuracy, and the 75/43 has much better overall penetration and fires faster. Keep these aspects in mind as underestimating your opponent may lead to your folly.
Usage in battles
The best way to use the Pvkan m/43 is as a sniper, as its very high muzzle velocity and generally powerful telescopic sights make long-ranged shots a cinch, with the 110 g of explosive filler making follow-up shots almost always unnecessary. Ideally you should find a ridge or hill to hull-down in and allow your excellent gun depression to work to its fullest potential.
It also finds itself reasonably effective in the ambush role, as its strengths translate very well to the playstyle. Players however should be cautious with the longer reload, as you may quickly find yourself outnumbered if you are not careful.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Excellent ballistics.
- Very good post-pen damage.
- Decent reload.
- Often has strong optics attached.
- Very good gun depression, either 15° or 10°.
Cons:
- Stock grind can be painful with the uncapped slpprj m/41 shell.
- Reload can leave one wanting at times.
History
Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
.
Media
An excellent addition to the article would be a video guide, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
