History
The 90-K is a variant of the 85 mm air defense gun M1939 (GRAU designation 52-K), an 85 mm anti-aircraft gun more famous for its adaptation as the primary weapon of the T-34-85. From June to August of 1941, this Red Army anti-aircraft weapon was tested on the mount of the 34-K as a more powerful replacement for the Soviet Navy's medium anti-aircraft gun. While it entered production at Factory No. 8 at Sverdlovsk in 1942, the gun wasn't officially accepted into service until after the end of World War II in June 1946. The 90-K were mounted on the MPK Pr.122bis, MPK-163 river boats, the Yasterb-class patrol boats, the Kalinin and Kaganovich-class cruisers, and on destroyers such as the Ognevoy-class. Production was transferred to Factory No. 92 in Gorky in 1949 which continued production into the 1950s. 37 were still in Soviet Navy service when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and 90-K remains in use on the Skoryy-class destroyers and some small river boats in the Chinese PLAN.
