Comparison with analogues

Give a comparative description of cannons/machine guns that have firepower equal to this weapon.

Usage in battles

Describe the cannon/machine gun in the game - its distinctive features, tactics of usage against notable opponents. Please don't write a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought.

Pros and cons

Summarise and briefly evaluate the weaponry in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark pros and cons as a list.

Pros:

  • Very powerful cannon that can take down enemy planes and light to medium ground targets with ease
  • High rate of fire

Cons:

  • No tracer rounds
  • Very low muzzle velocity
  • Important bullet drop beyond 1,000 m
  • Long reload time (AB)
  • Low ammo capacity

History

The Akan m/55 is a Swedish licensed variant of the British ADEN (Armament Development, Enfield) 30mm cannon. The ADEN was based on the World War II-era Mauser Maschinenkanone (automatic cannon) 213, a prototype anti-bomber weapon that was never able to get it into production due to its limited propellant, excessive barrel wear, and the Combined Bomber Offensive by the Allies crippling Germany's industry.

After the war ended, many Germany plans and designs came into possession of the Allied Powers as spoils of victory. The Mk 213 was among these designs which caught the attention of both Britain and France. Britain's Armament Development Establishment along with the French company GIAT jointly improved on the design replacing the 30x90mm cartridge with a 30x110mm cartridge which moved the issues of having limited propellant and improving the muzzle velocity to 2,600ft/s (540m/s) only slightly lower than the 20mm Hispano Mk.V which was then in service in Britain. Combined with a cyclic rate of 1,300 rpm compared to the Mk.V's 750rpm, the newly developed cannon proved itself to be superior in a dogfight. Britain would approve of manufacturing this new at Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield which led to it getting christened the ADEN which entered service in 1954 on the Hawker Hunter F.1. ADEN got the attention of the Swedish who used it to arm the J32B Lansen fighter jets in 1954, the J34 in 1956 (a Swedish variant of the Hawker Hunter), and J35A Draken jets in 1960 where it was designated the Akan m/55. The Akan m/55 itself had a variant that was developed later. The J32 suffered numerous accidents during its service in the Swedish Air Force leading to multiple jets being scrapped. The Swedish company FFV, in collaboration with the French S. A. Engins Matra, developed a gun pod designation by the Swedish Air Force as the 30mm Akankapsel which recycled the ADEN cannons from their scrapped fighter jets for the newer AJ37 Viggen attacker, and SK60B trainer aircraft because both aircraft were designed without an internal cannon. The FFV gun pod also service in the Austrian Air Force with their SAAB-105OE trainer aircraft.
