Type 99 (75 mm)
Contents
Description
The type 99 kuku shiki senshashō (九九式七五粍戦車砲) is a tank mounted 75mm cannon, which is in warthunder in form of the armament of the Japanese type 2 Ho-I medium tank.
In July 1937 the technical bureau of the army was planning on future weaponry, including later employed 47mm and 57mm guns, however it also was thinking of a short 75mm cannon for supportive functions, later on according studies were made about the argument. In December 1940, a prototype was manufactured in the Osaka army arsenal. In the end, only few examples of the modified type 99 cannon were built, as it was never heavily employed in combat due to the shortages of material and concentration on different types of tanks, as well as different sectors of the army and especially navy.
The development of the corresponding type 2 Ho-I ceded too, as it was already obsolete by the time the project had ended, though the few types that were built were then integrated in the home defence.
The gun itself however was a potent 75mm cannon at the time it was considered to be employed, and was certainly effective against defensive structures and infantry. Though it does not possess overwhelming penetration with only 43mm penetration at 10m with the type 95 APHE, it can be used for anti tank combat effectively.
However due to being constructed as a supportive gun it features a slow muzzle velocity, therefore it cannot be handled as a cannon that is truly omnipotent. However the big advantage in contrast to its low penetration and its rather slow muzzle velocity is the explosive mass in the shells, with even the APHE sporting 460g TNT of explosive mass. Meaning that if and when the shell penetrates, it is sure to do considerable damage. Also another advantage is the availability of early HEAT, being the type 2 shell, giving the cannon 90mm of penetration at any range, though limiting the damage done. Smoke shells in form of the type 90 are also available.

General info
The cannon itself, as being designed as a pure close support weapon, is still quite usable in tank combat.
However the low muzzle velocity makes the cannon rather unusable as a means of sniping, and is therefore more employable in close quarters combat.
Due to lacking any good penetration, it is also hard to destroy any mildly armoured target, meaning that often weak spots will have to be exploited or external components will be targeted instead, making heavy use of the ginormous explosive mass most shells carry.
It is therefore a very potent supportive gun, meaning that in a team combined with other types of tanks this gun may excel due to the very different characteristics it displays.
Available shells
- Type 94 HE: The stock-given HE shell, namely here the type 94, is pretty useless as it has (of course due to it being HE) only 12mm of penetration, completely unusable in fighting armoured fighting vehicles. However it is highly usable against vehicles that have either very slight armour or no armour (for example most low tier anti-air tanks). It also has some sort of overpressure effect, though that is not a great mean of destroying most vehicles. It can though be used to damage external components as it has 810g TNT as explosive mass.
- Type 95 APHE: with only 43mm of penetration, the APHE is a pretty tricky shell to employ, as it will struggle to penetrate most targets on its rank, and is only usable against most reserve tanks in the most lucky engagements. Though it carries 460g of TNT as explosive mass, making every penetration highly dangerous and deadly, of course IF it penetrates.
- Type 2 HEAT: The type 2 HEAT gives the cannon a small advantage that should not be underestimated. The acceptable penetration of 90mm at any range (!) is able to get through almost every tank at its tier if not angled. the only drawback is the underwhelming post-pen damage. It however gives the cannon a great touch.
- Type 90 Smoke: This shell is most obviously a smoke shell, at low tiers highly usable as most tanks do not feature smoke launchers, and you can help in engagements by either hiding retreats or causing confusion in enemy lines during firefights, obscuring positions.

Pros and cons
Pros:
- Great post-pen damage on APHE
- Availability of early HEAT rounds
Cons:
- low penetration of only 43mm on APHE (excluding HEAT)
