The J1N1 is armed with:

  • 1 x 20 mm Type 99 Model 2 cannon, nose-mounted (60 rpg)
  • 2 х 7.7 mm Type 97 machine gun, nose-mounted (600 rpg = 1200 total)

Suspended armament

The J1N1 can be outfitted with the following ordnance:

  • Without load
  • 2 х 60 kg Navy Type 97 Number 6 ground bomb

Defensive armament

Main article: Type 97 (7.7 mm)

The J1N1 is defended by:

  • 4 х 7.7 mm Type 97 machine gun (750 rpg = 3000 total)

Usage in battles

Unlike most Japanese aircraft, the J1N1 can take quite a lot of punishment, and being a twin-engine fighter/interceptor/attacker, it can fly with only one engine operational, and even if it loses part of a wing. While there is no real protection for its fuel tanks, it is less likely to catch fire quickly than other Japanese aircraft at its BR. If playing RB, it is BR 2.0, but its forte is really in AB, where it is BR 1.7. Its bomb load is only small, but at the BR enough to take out a few ground targets, and its cannons and machine guns can also be useful when flying low and strafing ground targets. The J1N1 flying low in AB can be a real distraction for the enemy team, keeping them away from the objectives of destroying ground targets. None of its weapons are very powerful, and its ammo count is quite low, but in AB that is not such a problem. For quite a large aircraft, it is very maneuverable, and the "ace up its sleeve" is the rear-facing turrets, each with two 7.7 mm machine guns, and, unlike other fighters and bombers at its BR, the rear gunners are enclosed. Enemy fighters on the tail of a J1N1 often find they suffer critical damage or are shot down, while the offensive guns are trained on oncoming aircraft or ground targets. The play style is neither "Boom and Zoom" nor "Dogfight", but rather to fly low,and drag the enemy onto the tail of the J1N1. In AB, enemies will sometimes try to ram the J1N1, in an attempt to knock off a wing, but it will continue to fly, often losing only the wingtip.

This aircraft is less useful in RB/SB, mainly due to its low ammo count, but the characteristic play style mentioned before could prove almost as rewarding, and it can take quite a lot of hits before being destroyed.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • 7.92 mm tail gun
  • Fairly good speed
  • 8.5 mm of armor in pilot's seat
  • Good maneuverability
  • Two engine design

Cons:

  • Beat in turn fights by some aircraft
  • Limited ammunition for all weapons
  • Lack of protection around fuel tanks, engines, and gunner
  • Weak climb rate
  • Inefficient armament

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/ History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === Encyclopedia Info ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
