Description
The XM140 and XM552 development started in 1963 as an option to satisfy the need for a high penetrating gun for the Cobra attack helicopter. The XM140 is used on the UH-1C XM-30, a modified UH-1C, where two XM140 autocannons mounted in the fully flexible XM156/M156 universal mounts to create the XM-30 system. The XM140 in the XM-30 system was introduced with the UH-1C XM-30 as a premium pack in Update 1.81 "The Valkyries" and was removed from sale after the 2019 New Year Sale.

History
Development for the cannon and XM552 round began in 1963. The weapon system was initally proposed for the Cobra helicopter and later the Cheyenne helicopter. The system was not fielded as the XM140 was too heavy for the Cobra; and the development for the Cheyenne was terminated. Development of the XM552 continued because the round had potential use with other 30mm cannons.
