The Project 89 “Bernau” is a low BR Sub-Chaser and Minesweeper found in the German coastal tech tree. It features a unique weapon in the form of the Strela-2M SAM that can deal with most aircraft it can face without much trouble. Despite its size however it is very vulnerable to enemy fire due to the lack of armor as well as a very low crew count.
Pros: | Cons: |
12x Strela-2M SAM | Strela-2M has no proximity fuze |
Strela-2M has an uncaged seeker before launch | Only 8G maximum missile overload |
Decent close-range firepower | No long-range armaments |
Good maximum missile range | Poor lock range against prop aircraft |
Main Armaments
The main armament of the Bernau are 3 twin barrel 2M-3 25mm autocannons. Featuring a relatively high rate of fire, they are very deadly against enemy vessels at close range, being able to knock out even medium-sized vessels within seconds. However, the ammunition options are quite limited, the stock belt is the best all-round option while the AP belt is ideal for dealing with medium-sized vessels. The 2M-3 cannons excel at taking out targets until about 2km where they start to suffer from significant loss of penetration and poor accuracy.
In addition to the 2M-3 autocannons, the Bernau comes equipped with the Strela-2M SAM. Despite having a maximum overload of 8G and lacking a proximity fuze, it is very potent at dealing with early jets as well as enemy propeller aircraft as long as they are within range.
Mobility
The mobility of the Bernau is quite average for a ship of its size, featuring a respectable top speed of around 32kph. While being nowhere near the speed of patrol boats, it is on par if not superior to the speed of other subchasers. Its turning radius is also quite good for a ship of its type, being able to keep up with smaller vessels in turns.
Survivability
Despite the size of this vessel, its survivability is quite poor. Due to the lack of armor but also the low amount of crew, only a couple hits from a high-caliber cannon can knock you out or at least cause severe damage. In addition to that, even a few hits from even light machine guns can set you on fire and knock out a lot of your crew while autocannons can almost instantly knock out your turrets, leaving you defenseless.
Conclusion
The Bernau is a hard hitting but fragile ship, relying on its firepower to take out enemies before they can inflict any significant damage. Despite its top speed being lower than patrol boats, it can often outspeed some of the other heavier coastal vessels.
It’s best suited as a sentry on capture points, taking out any enemy that gets too close before they get a chance to return fire. This task is only made easier by using the Strela-2M to take out any attacking aircraft with significantly lower risk than using conventional autocannons.
