With the development of jet aviation after World War 2, the militaries of the world recognized the danger of high-altitude high-speed bombers. The new threat could not be counteracted with any of the fighters available at the time. The situation needed a solution, and fast. As early as 1948, the Swedish Air Force considered the issue and announced some rather ambitious requirements for a new interceptor.
