MiG-35
The MiG-35 is an advanced version of the MiG-29M/M2 (Product 9-15) and the carrier-based MiG-29K (9-41), meeting the "4++ generation" standard. The Mikoyan Design Bureau developed the MiG-29M between 1986 and 1991. The aircraft successfully completed testing and received preliminary approval for mass production, but the dissolution of the Soviet Union halted these plans. In the mid-2000s, the idea of developing a new MiG in a modern configuration was revived with the MiG-35 project. The aircraft made its maiden flight on January 26, 2017, and was presented at an international air show in the Moscow region the following day. The MiG-35 features an AESA radar capable of tracking up to 30 aerial targets, a new HMD, and an expanded arsenal of guided air-to-surface weapons. In June 2019, the Russian Aerospace Forces received the first two production MiG-35s.
The MiG-35 also competed in India's MRCA tender for the supply of 126 fighters. In August 2007, requests for proposals were sent to six manufacturers, including the Mikoyan Design Bureau. During the competition, the Indian side expressed dissatisfaction with the aircraft's avionics; the radar failed to achieve its maximum detection range, and the RD-33MK engines did not provide sufficient thrust. In April 2011, the MiG-35 was eliminated from the competition. Russia later offered the aircraft to India again as part of the MMRCA 2.0 tender for 114 fighters.
The MiG-35 was introduced in Update 2.59 "Sky Odyssey". This aircraft boasts an impressive climb rate, high-altitude speed, and modern avionics. Its AESA radar and HMD enable effective employment of the R-77-1 and R-73 missiles in short- and medium-range engagements. Its selection of guided air-to-surface weapons, including Kh-38ML/MT missiles and guided bombs, also makes the MiG-35 a formidable aircraft in mixed battles. While its subsonic maneuverability rivals the best in the MiG-29 family, its limited fuel capacity requires careful management.
