The MiG-29N is a variant of the MiG-29 (9.12SD) fighter supplied to the Malaysian Air Force. In 1994, a contract was signed in Kuala Lumpur for the purchase of 18 MiG-29 fighters, including two MiG-29UB combat trainers. The deal involved modernized fighters classified by MiG Design Bureau specialists as a modification of the MiG-29SD. These fighters have an improved radar, an expanded range of weapons, and an increased combat payload. The customer also requested several additional features: the aircraft had to be adapted to the humid tropical climate of the Asia-Pacific region and be equipped with satellite communication and navigation systems and engines with an extended service life. Additionally, an in-flight refueling system was introduced. To reduce the time it would take to implement the contract, the parties agreed to a phased modernization of the delivered aircraft to the MiG-29SD level. Serial MiG-29s with minimal modifications were shipped from Russia. In Malaysia, with the participation of Russian specialists, the aircraft were equipped with a refueling system, a better radar system, and new RVV-AE missiles. Deliveries of the aircraft began in April 1995 and ended in June. The first modified 9.12SD aircraft took to the skies in 1998. MiG-29 aircraft remained in service with Malaysia until 2017, when they were replaced by Su-30MKM.
The Malaysian MiG-29N was introduced in Update 2.53 "Line of Contact", as part of the Japanese aviation research tree. This aircraft is an early version of the MiG-29 that features new weapons in the form of ARH RVV-AE missiles. The MiG-29N has a high maximum speed, excellent dynamics, and good maneuverability thanks to its powerful engines. However, the fighter lacks weapons to effectively engage enemy armored vehicles; its ground attack arsenal consists only of rockets, napalm, and unguided bombs of various calibers. Another drawback of the aircraft is its outdated avionics.
