The Junkers Ju 88 was a German twin-engine dive bomber of the Second World War, developed by Junkers in 1936. The aircraft's history began in November 1935, when the Reich Air Ministry issued a requirement for a high-speed bomber. Junkers proved the most successful competitor and presented a bomber prototype under the designation Ju 88. The first flight of the initial prototype, Ju 88 V1, took place on December 21, 1936.
In August 1937, the General Staff revised the requirements for the new high-speed bomber, which was now expected to be capable of carrying out shallow dive-bombing attacks. As a result, Junkers engineers had to significantly modify the fifth prototype, the Ju 88 V5, strengthening the aircraft's structure to meet the new requirements. The first production variant, the Ju 88 A-1, entered mass production in mid-1939. A total of 1,270 Ju 88 A-1 aircraft were built, and they were widely employed by the Luftwaffe during the early stages of the Second World War.
The Ju 88 A-1 was introduced in Update 1.55 "Royal Armor". This bomber has good maneuverability, a high top speed, and a respectable bomb load. However, it lacks powerful defensive armament capable of reliably fending off enemy fighters. Additionally, the absence of armor protection leaves the crew particularly vulnerable to enemy fire.
