In 1944, the UK created two armed versions of the Landing Craft Tank (LCT) transport ship to provide fire support for infantry during amphibious operations: the Landing Craft Gun (LCG) and the smaller Landing Craft Gun (LCG(M)). A total of 71 LCG(M) ships were built, including LCG(M)-111. France purchased this ship in 1948 and soon renamed it L9059 to comply with NATO standards. The ship was delivered from Portsmouth to Saigon that winter and was put into service. It participated in battles against the Vietnamese in French Cochinchina and was nicknamed the "River Battleship" by the French because it was the most heavily armed French ship that was able to enter rivers. After the war, it was used briefly and, in 1956, it was sold for scrap.
The L9059 was introduced in Update 2.39 "Dance of Dragons". Although it is a slow ship, it has fairly powerful main and anti-aircraft armaments. Commanders will also appreciate its thick armor around the ammunition compartment and engine room. In battle, the L9059 is very similar to German anti-aircraft barges in that it is difficult to attack them head-on but easy to escape or destroy with torpedoes.
