The F-15C Golden Eagle was a modernisation programme for US Air Force F-15C fighters aimed at extending their service life. By the early 21st century, the USAF was no longer satisfied with the avionics of its F-15Cs, and most airframes required inspection and repair. As a result, the Golden Eagle programme was launched in 2010. Its main upgrades included the installation of the APG-63(V)3 AESA radar, a helmet-mounted cueing system (if the aircraft did not already have one), and the addition of the Link 16 tactical data link. Most aircraft were modernised by 2015, though some remained in their original configuration due to the introduction of the F-15EX and the USAF’s intent to retire single-seat F-15Cs. Today, a limited number of these fighters remain in US service.
The F-15C Golden Eagle was introduced in Update 2.51 "Spearhead". Its key differences from the earlier F-15C include the newer AIM-120C-5 missiles, an updated radar with an AESA antenna, and the ability to use BOL countermeasure dispensers. The aircraft also received expanded air-to-ground stores, including the Sniper ATP targeting pod with improved magnification. However, compared to its strike-oriented counterpart, the F-15E, it can carry only a limited selection of air-to-ground munitions, which makes it relatively ineffective in mixed battles.
