Following the shortcomings of the F-111, the USAF sought a new replacement for its “frontline heavy attacker” role, this time based on the existing F-15B airframe. This new aircraft would feature a redesigned fuselage and wing section, incorporating newer, stronger engines and superplastic bonding technology to withstand the stress of the higher power and weight. From the outset, the aircraft would use the conformal fuel tanks intended for the F-15C, not only extending its range but also allowing the mounting of extra hardpoints for more ordnance. The rear seat of the F-15B was also reworked, changing from a simple dual-control trainer setup to a complete weapon-system officer (WSO) station. The radar was upgraded, not just to increase performance but also commonality, as the computerised modules on the new APG-70 radar had 80%+ commonality with the APG-71 (F-14D) and the APG-73 (F/A-18). As a result of these avionics upgrades, this new “Strike Eagle”, designated the F-15E, would also be made compatible with a variety of new external pods and ordnance sets previously incompatible with the F-15 family, such as the LANTIRN targeting pod and various laser and GPS-guided weapons. Entering service in the late 1980s, the F-15E continues to see service to this day thanks to upgrade programmes integrating new systems to keep the Strike Eagle fleet updated against modern threats.
Introduced in Update "Firebirds", the F-15E Strike Eagle is a “strike fighter” at the final ranks of the US tech tree, but do not let its designation fool you; this “attacker” is also an excellent fighter. Thanks to its incredible acceleration and top speed, coupled with powerful radar, eight missiles (including IRCCM-equipped AIM-9Ms and active-radar homing AIM-120s), a large array of countermeasures, advanced avionics and an HMS system, the F-15E further bolsters the “multirole” doctrine of top US aircraft, allowing it to fulfil all roles it finds itself in, from performing CAP to singlehandedly obliterating a full ground team with a single sortie’s loadout thanks to a plethora of laser, GPS, IR, and conventional ordnance. The F-15E can balance both “anti-air” and “anti-ground” roles perfectly, creating a multirole monster for its tier when used correctly in contested airspaces of mixed battles.
