After the CA-23 project failed to develop a two-seat supersonic interceptor, the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) decided to limit itself to purchasing a license to manufacture the F-86F Sabre. However, CAC's designers chose to use their own Avon engine instead of the American J47 engine. The Avon was shorter but wider than the American engine. Because of this, a significant portion of the fuselage had to be redesigned, and the air intake had to be enlarged. Additionally, the machine guns were replaced with two 30-mm ADEN cannons, and the fuel capacity was increased. The first flight of the CA-26 prototype took place on August 3, 1953. The first production aircraft, the CA-27s, began arriving in 1954. The initial aircraft were of the Mk.30 variant. This was followed by the Mk.31, which removed the slats. The final variant, the Mk.32, featured an Avon Mk.26 engine instead of an Avon Mk.20 and had hardpoints for air-to-air missiles. A total of 69 Mk. 32 aircraft were built.
Australian fighters saw action in several conflicts, beginning with the Malayan Emergency. There, CA-27s saw combat from 1958 to 1960. They also served as air defense fighters during the Konfrontasi. Additionally, CA-27s participated in operations against communist insurgents in Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. Starting in 1964, French Mirage IIIs began arriving to replace the Sabre aircraft. By July 1971, they had all been decommissioned, and a few were transferred to Malaysia and Indonesia.
The Australian CA-27 Mk.32 was introduced in Update 2.59 "Sky Odyssey" as a part of the British aviation research tree. It is the heaviest Sabre, exceeding even the F-86F-40 or CL-13 Mk.6 in weight. Conversely, it has the most powerful engine, giving it a similar power-to-weight ratio. However, due to its weight, it accelerates slower, and due to the lack of slats, it is at a noticeable disadvantage in dogfights. Consequently, it has difficulty maneuvering against many other types of fighters. However, setting aside comparisons with its counterparts, the CA-27 possesses powerful cannon and missile armaments. In a prolonged dogfight, it can still defeat the enemy thanks to its good energy retention.
