The McDonnell Douglas F-15J(M) Eagle (J-MSIP II) is a fourth-generation Japanese fighter aircraft. It is an upgraded version of the F-15J, which was developed under the MSIP II (Multistage Improvement Program). The MSIP II was originally designed to modernize American F-15C aircraft. Modernization of the Japanese fleet began in 1987, with the aircraft receiving upgrades similar to those of their American counterparts. These upgrades included new F100-PW-220 engines and AN/APG-63(V)1 radar, which is capable of employing AIM-120 missiles. In December 2004, the Japanese government approved an additional midterm defense program to further modernize the F-15J MSIP. This program was intended to continue until 2009. This package included new ejection seats, engines, and avionics to integrate domestically developed AAM-4 missiles. The program was delayed, and all 102 aircraft planned for modernization were only upgraded by August 2014.
The F-15J(M) was introduced in Update 2.37 "Seek & Destroy". The most notable difference from its predecessor, the F-15J, is the incorporation of new medium-range, active radar-homing missiles: the AIM-120 and the AAM-4. Another significant change is the installation of a helmet-mounted targeting system. Thanks to its new armament and good flight performance, the F-15J(M) has become an even more formidable opponent in air combat. However, as with the F-15J, it remains ineffective in mixed battles due to its limited ability to engage ground targets.
