History

The 283 mm/52 SK C/28 was the main cannon mounted on the Deutschland-class Panzerschiffe (literally "Armored Ships" but nicknamed "pocket battleships" by the British) such as the Admiral Graf Spee. While the Reichsmarine (German Navy) originally planned on arming these ships with six 30 cm guns or 12-inch guns, the design was later changed to the 283 mm/52 SK C/28 guns for two reasons. The first was political as the 11-inch guns would be less likely to provoke a response from the Allied Powers who through the Naval Inter-Allied Commission of Control, had the power to regulate the size of armaments on German ships. The second was economical as the smaller calibre eased pressure from the ship's design staff and were easier to produce compared to larger artillery pieces given the industrialized Ruhr region was under French occupation. The SK C/28 was a built-up gun with a one piece barrel jacket and had inferior ballistic characteristics compared to the later 283 mm/54,5 SK C/34.
