The McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II is a two-seat, third-generation interceptor and fighter-bomber (later classified as a tactical fighter) developed from the F-4B variant specifically for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Major changes were made to both the airframe and avionics: the aircraft’s airframe was strengthened for carrier operations, its takeoff and landing characteristics were improved, and a new AN/APG-59 radar with Doppler mode capability replaced the previous radar system. Serial production of this Phantom modification took place from 1966 to 1972, and the F-4J actively participated in Operations Rolling Thunder and Linebacker during the Vietnam War. Over time, the Phantoms began to cede their places on the decks of American aircraft carriers to the newer F-14 Tomcat. Although considered obsolete, F-4Js are still stored at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base to this day.
Introduced in Update “Winged Lions”, this naval version of the Phantom is equipped with a pulse-Doppler radar, which, in combination with the new AIM-7F Sparrow missiles, makes the F-4J an extremely dangerous opponent in long-range aerial combat. However, it lacks guided munitions against ground targets, and the absence of leading-edge slats prevents it from manoeuvring as effectively as its army counterpart, the F-4E.
