The Finnish Air Force was formed on March 6th, 1918, but the country initially took to the sky without home-manufactured aircraft. Imported vehicles comprised the majority of the army. Everything changed in 1921 when the production of the first Finnish fighters, Haukka and Myrsky, was launched at the Valtion Lentokonetehdas aircraft factory in Helsinki. And since the start of the war, Germany sent over to Finland 160 state-of-the-art Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 and G-6 fighters. However, even that was not enough to handle the Soviet air forces, so the Finns had to commission the factory to create a domestically manufactured aircraft that would match the characteristics of the G-6 series Messerschmitt. The creation of the engineers, who had also worked on the Myrsky, was worth of great respect. Thanks to the powertrain they had borrowed from the Germans, the Finns managed to develop their very own unique design which only resembled the Messerschmitt in its front part. The aircraft received the designation Pyörremyrsky, which translates as "Hurricane" from Finnish.
