The Wellington Mk III was a further development of the previous Mk II, which featured Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. The Mk III, however, was powered by the Bristol Hercules III or XI and, compared to the Mk Ic and Mk II, had a tail turret enhanced with two additional guns for a total of four. The Mk III was produced from late 1941 until late 1942. After trials in 1942, it was also cleared for glider towing.
The Wellington Mk III has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27. It features great manoeuvrability paired with a sizeable bomb load as well as a variety of ordnance, allowing multirole use such as anti-shipping with its two Mk. XII torpedoes or ground battles with the massive 4,000 lb H.C. Mk. II bomb. Unlike the Mk Ic, the Wellington Mk III features stronger engines, making it faster than the previous Mk Ic, as well as strengthened defensive armament, with the tail turret guns increased to four. However, the Mk III is still unable to outrun contemporary fighters, making it vulnerable to their attacks and requiring friendly fighter cover to increase survivability.
