One of the ways the T-90M was modernized was by installing an active protection system. In April 2023, a patent was published for a T-90M with the Arena-M APS. Compared to the earlier version displayed on the T-72B3, the new system differs in the placement of its modules, which fit within the T-90M's external dimensions, and in the number of countermeasures. The first prototype was presented in February 2025. After successfully completing trials in June 2026, production of the T-90M with the Arena-M APS began.
The T-90M (Arena-M) was introduced in Update 2.57 "Heavy Cavalry". In terms of combat characteristics, it is similar to the standard T-90M, differing mainly by the presence of an APS. Its excellent frontal and side armor allows it to withstand hits from chemical and kinetic projectiles. At the same time, its advanced fire control system allows it to engage both ground and air targets with powerful APFSDS rounds and airburst HE shells. However, the T-90M (Arena-M) lags behind most of its opponents in terms of mobility due to its modest power-to-weight ratio and low reverse speed. Additionally, any penetration is likely to damage critical modules and crew members despite the presence of spall liners.
