The 2S19M2 “Msta-SM2” is a Russian self-propelled howitzer introduced as an improved version of the previous 2S19M1 “Msta-S”. The 2S19M1/M2 are manufactured by Uraltransmash (a subsidiary of Uralvagonzavod), the same company that manufactures the T-90M MBT. Compared to the previous 2S19M1, the 2S19M2 is equipped with an improved autoloader and a different 152 mm howitzer. The 2S19M2 was introduced in 2013 and both versions of the 2S19 are in active use.
The 2S19M2 was introduced in Update “Hornet’s Sting” as a new squadron vehicle for the USSR ground tech tree. The 2S19M2 offers a notable improvement over the tech tree 2S19M1, with a 1.5-second faster reload. With a very potent 152 mm howitzer that can fire multiple types of ammunition, the 2S19M2 is able to easily deal with most threats, even in uptiers. However, the 2S19M2 is a glass cannon with very poor armor (17 mm at most) and survivability due to the huge ammo autoloader in the turret. To maximize its effectiveness, the 2S19M2 should be positioned behind cover or at a distance, where it can utilize its potent howitzer to good effect. It can also function as a decent anti-air vehicle, with the 3OF45 (PF) HE-VT shells and the commander’s 12.7 mm machine gun. However, close-quarters combat should be avoided in the 2S19M2 due to its unwieldiness and very slow turret traverse.
