The Tank, Combat, Full Tracked: 105-mm Gun, M60A1 is the first mass-produced upgrade of the American M60 main battle tank. Following the cancellation of the T95 Medium Tank project, the U.S. military approved a program in 1960 to modernize the M60. The plan was to mount the T95E7 turret on an improved M60 hull. This turret featured better armor and more crew space thanks to the gun's slight forward offset. Chrysler Defense was responsible for the project. The first two prototypes were ready by May 1961. In June, the prototypes were designated the M60E1. In addition to the new turret, the tank received an upgraded engine and an improved fire control system. The modifications were officially adopted on October 22. By 1980, 7,840 tanks had been produced.
Throughout its service, various improvements were introduced to the M60A1 gradually. One of the most significant improvements was the installation of a gun stabilizer in 1972 known as the M60A1 AOS (Add-On Stabilization). Integrating a hydraulic actuator into the existing fire control system provided the gun with two-plane stabilization, which significantly increased the tank’s combat effectiveness.
The M60A1 (AOS) was introduced in Update 1.61 "Road to Glory". It is a tank with strong armor, a powerful, stabilized 105mm gun, and good mobility. However, its basic armor cannot protect it from APFSDS rounds. Its large size makes it highly visible on the battlefield, and its side armor is vulnerable to autocannons.
