HMS Barham (04) was a British Queen Elizabeth-class battleship named in honour of Charles Middleton, 1st Baron Barham. She was laid down on 24 February 1913, launched on 31 December 1914, and commissioned on 19 October 1915. This class of battleships was the first in the British Navy to carry 15-inch guns. Furthermore, battleships of this class differed from their Iron Duke-class predecessors by having increased speed due to new oil-fuelled boilers.
During World War I, Barham distinguished herself in the Battle of Jutland. During that battle, she sustained several hits from German ships, causing minor damage and killing 26 crew members. The battleship herself also scored several minor hits on enemy ships. However, along with her sister ship Valiant, Barham was recognised as one of the most effective ships in the British Navy. The ship saw no further combat operations for the remainder of the war.
During the interwar period, the battleship participated in activities typical of British ships—long-distance voyages to show the flag and take part in exercises. Between 1931 and 1934, Barham underwent extensive modernisation which, unlike her sister ships, did not involve engine replacement or superstructure reconstruction. It primarily consisted of upgrading her secondary armament and carrying out major repairs.
By the start of World War II, Barham was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet. There, she took part in the Battle of Dakar, where she was damaged by fire from French ships. She was subsequently used to escort convoys in the Mediterranean. In 1941, the ship participated in the bombardment of Bardia and the Battle of Cape Matapan, during which Barham sank the destroyer Alfredo Oriani and contributed to the sinking of the heavy cruiser Zara. On 24 November 1941, the battleship was torpedoed by the German submarine U-331 while hunting Italian convoys. Three torpedoes damaged the ship so badly that she capsized and exploded within minutes. 487 people were rescued, while 862 were killed. The loss of the battleship was captured on film, but the event was censored until the end of the war.
HMS Barham was introduced as a reward for the 2024 Steel Baron event in her 1916 configuration. She possesses a powerful main battery and boasts decent manoeuvrability and protection, but her anti-aircraft defences are extremely weak.
