The Panavia Tornado GR.4 is an upgraded version of the Tornado GR.1 ground-attack aircraft. Modernization of the Tornado began in 1996 at the request of the Royal Air Force after the Gulf War. The aircraft gained all-weather and night-flight capabilities, enabling it to operate in any conditions at any time and allowing the crew to use night-vision goggles. One of the nose-mounted cannons was replaced with an equipment that allowed using FLIR thermal imaging camera. The Tornado could also be equipped with countermeasure containers and high-precision air-to-ground weapons such as the Paveway IV, the GBU-24B Paveway III, and the Brimstone. Between 1996 and 2003, all 142 Tornado GR.1 aircraft were upgraded to the GR.4 standard.
The GR.4 variant was widely used in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya, participating in most of the Royal Air Force’s strike operations. In March 2019, the Royal Air Force completely phased out the Tornado aircraft, and the F-35B Lightning II and the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 took over their role.
The Tornado GR.4 was introduced in Update 2.41 "Firebirds". Its arsenal has expanded significantly compared to its predecessor with the addition of the LITENING targeting pod, laser-guided bombs, PGM 500/1000 infrared-guided bombs, and the new Brimstone missile. The Brimstone missile is similar to the AGM-114 Hellfire, but has an increased range. Plane's more powerful engines provide impressive thrust while using afterburner; however, the plane struggles in air combat due to heavy weight and insufficient maneuverability.
