The General Dynamics F-111C is a multirole strike aircraft developed specifically for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) based on the American F-111. In the 1960s, the RAAF sought a replacement for its ageing Canberra bombers, which lacked sufficient range and all-weather capability. Of the options considered, the RAAF selected the American TFX project, which would later become known as the F-111. However, Australia had specific operational requirements, leading to the development of the F-111C variant.
Key modifications included extended wings, redesigned air intakes, reinforced landing gear and upgraded radio equipment. These improvements increased flight range and enhanced overall performance. The first aircraft entered service in 1973. A total of 24 new F-111C aircraft were built for Australia, with an additional four converted from American F-111A models. The aircraft never saw combat, instead being used primarily for reconnaissance missions in East Timor as part of a UN peacekeeping operation. The F-111C served in the RAAF for over 40 years, finally being retired in 2010.
The Australian F-111C was introduced in Update 2.39 "Dance of Dragons" as a part of the British aviation research tree. It is similar to the American F-111F and retains many of its advantages, including the AN/AVQ-26 Pave Tack targeting pod for laser-guided bombs, all-aspect AIM-9L air-to-air missiles and extensive countermeasure systems. However, the F-111C has less powerful engines and a limited selection of guided weapons. Notably, it lacks infrared fire-and-forget missiles.
