Designed as an agile fighter aircraft with a potent ground attack capability to replace the UK’s ageing fleet of Phantoms and Jaguars, the Eurofighter Typhoon entered RAF service in 2003. It was the result of over two decades of development by Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The joint project began in 1983 as a five-nation programme; however, France, struggling to reconcile its requirements with those of the other four nations, left the programme in 1985 to focus on developing its own Rafale aircraft. The four nations pushed ahead with what was then known as the European Fighter Aircraft; by the mid-1990s, prototypes were taking to the sky, and by 2005, it had entered service with all four partner nations.
The delivery of Typhoons was split into Tranches and then Blocks. To get the aircraft into service quicker, the first Blocks (Tranche 1 Blocks 1 & 2) were delivered while the air-to-ground capability was still being developed. These aircraft were known as the Typhoon F.2 in UK service. Tranche 1 Block 5 added the PIRATE IRST system along with a rudimentary air-to-ground capability, with these aircraft becoming known as the Typhoon FGR.4. The FGR.4 name would then be retained for all subsequent RAF single-seat Typhoons of later Tranches/Blocks, despite the much-improved capability of these aircraft.
Introduced in Update "Storm Warning", the Typhoon FGR.4 represents a Tranche 2 Eurofighter and so provides players with an awesome mix of superb flight performance and a huge payload of both air-to-air and air-to-ground weaponry. The Typhoon boasts a high thrust-to-weight ratio and agility, allowing it to excel in close-range combat, while its powerful radar and large missile load also make it a potent adversary in BVR engagements. In the air-to-ground domain, the Typhoon’s massive weapons load makes it a true terror on the battlefield. The Typhoon FGR.4 boasts an excellent RWR and a MAWS; it is also one of the only fixed-wing aircraft in the game to feature a laser warning system (even other members of the Eurofighter family don’t have one), ensuring you really will be aware of nearly any threat.
