The JAS 39C EBS HU C (where EBS HU stands for "Export Baseline Standard Hungary") is a variant of the JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet that was developed for the Hungarian Air Force. Sweden adopted the JAS 39 Gripen fighter in the early 1990s, which immediately attracted the interest of many buyers, including Hungary. During the Cold War, the Hungarian Air Force’s fleet consisted of Soviet-made fighters, including the Su-22, MiG-23, and MiG-29. In 1999, Hungary joined NATO, and that same year, several proposals were made to upgrade the Hungarian Air Force to NATO standards. Various options were considered, including purchasing Western-made aircraft or modernizing the existing MiG-29s. In 2001, Hungary received offers from several countries to purchase F-16 fighters but ultimately chose the JAS 39 Gripen from the Swedish company Saab. In February 2003, Hungary and Sweden signed a contract for Hungary to lease 14 JAS 39A Gripen fighters for 10 years. Delivery of the aircraft continued until December 2007. Initially, Hungary received the JAS 39A/B Gripen variant; during service, the aircraft were upgraded to the JAS 39C/D Gripen standard.
According to the terms of the contract, Hungary had the option to purchase the Gripen aircraft at the end of the lease period. However, on January 30, 2012, the lease was extended to 2026. During their service, the Hungarian Gripens underwent several modernization cycles. They received a new PS-05/Mk.4 radar and MS.20 Block II software. As of 2016, the Hungarian Air Force had 14 JAS 39 Gripens in service, including 12 single-seat JAS 39Cs and two JAS 39D combat trainers. In February 2024, the Hungarian government announced the signing of a contract to purchase an additional four JAS 39C Gripen fighters.
The Hungarian JAS 39C EBS HU C was introduced in Update 2.35 "Alpha Strike" as a part of the Italian air research tree. Compared to existing Gripen variants in the Swedish and British research trees, the Hungarian modification features two new missiles: the AGM-65G with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead and the AGM-65H with a HEAT warhead. The Gripen is a versatile fighter that performs exceptionally well in the air and on the ground. In the air, the fighter benefits from its compact size and excellent flight characteristics. The Gripen has special BOL pylons under its wings that house containers with flares, up to 732. The Gripen can carry various weapons under these pylons: For air-to-air combat, it can carry AIM-9s and AIM-120s. For mixed battles it can use various bombs, including JDAMs or Laser-Guided. The downsides include an overall limited payload.
