The MiG-29 Sniper was the product of a cancelled Romanian attempt to modernise their fleet of MiG-29 “Fulcrum” fighter aircraft with newer Western avionics while retaining support for existing Soviet armaments. The MiG-29 Sniper received multiple upgrades, which included the addition of multifunction colour displays for the pilot, a new HUD, and Elbit’s Elisra SPS-20(V) radar warning receiver that replaced the antiquated SPO-15 on the standard Fulcrum. In the end, the Sniper upgrade programme was cancelled, and the Romanian Air Force chose to modernise their fleet of MiG-21s instead through the MiG-21 LanceR programme.
The MiG-29 Sniper was introduced in Update “Leviathans” as a premium pack in the Italian aviation tech tree. For air-to-air combat, the MiG-29 Sniper has access to the potent R-27ER missile for medium-to-long range engagements and the smaller R-60M infrared missile for close quarter combat. The pilot also has access to an HMD which can be used to lock onto targets that are off boresight. Additionally, the MiG-29 Sniper has an excellent digital radar warning receiver that can identify radar signatures while also providing track and launch warnings. However, the MiG-29 Sniper still has the disadvantages of the regular MiG-29: its N019E Topaz radar is inferior when compared to 4th-generation NATO aircraft, and the MiG-29 has mediocre energy retention and can be handily outmanoeuvred by common opponents like the F-15 and F-16 series of aircraft.
