Successful deployment of wheeled reconnaissance vehicles during WWII led the Bundeswehr to return to them when it decided to replace the M41 with a new scout vehicle. In 1968–1971, Daimler Benz's proposal was chosen and put into production in 1975 under the name Spähpanzer Luchs. The 8x8 vehicle was very quiet and mobile for its size; an uncommon feature was a separate rear driver for fast backward movement. Also, all four axles could steer for greater manoeuvrability. The Luchs was protected against rifle-calibre fire, and featured NBC protection and run-flat tyres. 408 vehicles were made until 1977. In 1980, the upgraded Luchs A1 was designed, featuring a double autocannon feed, and in 1985, the Luchs A2 was produced with thermal optics for the gunner. The Luchs was deployed in the Balkans as reconnaissance and patrol cars until their retirement in 2009.
The Luchs A2 was introduced in Update "Firebirds". It is not made for frontal engagements; the 20 mm cannon will have problems dealing with medium tanks even from the side. Only the frontal armour can withstand high-calibre machine guns, though the side fuel tanks do protect the turret crew from 12.7 mm bullets. However, the Luchs A2 does have a positive side: mobility. It has excellent top speed both forward and backward, and the spare driver allows it to escape even if the main one is hit. However, the wheeled chassis suffers off-road and cannot turn on the spot.
