The Commandant Dominé is a French minesweeper and the eighth ship in the Élan class. She was ordered on June 2, 1937; laid down on February 1, 1938; and launched on May 2, 1939. She was commissioned on May 13, 1940. Originally named La Rieuse, the ship was renamed on January 3, 1939. The development of the Élan-class minesweepers began in the mid-1930s, and construction of the first ship started in 1936. These boats were designed primarily to clear mines from French waters, but they were never used for this purpose. Due to their unusually low bow draft, the navy nicknamed them “half-submerged”.
The Commandant Dominé was captured by the British on July 13, 1940—just two months after entering service. It was soon transferred to the Free French Navy. In September, it participated in the operation Menace alongside the British navy. In 1941, the sloop's main armament was changed to a twin mount of four-inch Mk XVI guns. It also received a 40 mm Pom-Pom mount. The twin 13.2-mm machine guns remained but were supplemented by a number of 12.7-mm barrels. After World War II, Commandant Dominé remained in service with the French Navy. In 1947, it was modernized again with the installation of a 105 mm German gun, a 40 mm Bofors gun, and several 20 mm Erlikon guns. The sloop was used by the French until October 18, 1960, when it was decommissioned and scrapped.
The Commandant Dominé was introduced in Update 2.51 "Spearhead". It is a frigate with a small crew and lacks torpedo armament and speed. However, it boasts a 40mm Bofors gun in the bow, a 105mm gun in the stern, and a fairly empty interior.
