In 1996, the Dutch Army began searching for replacements for its outdated YPR-765 RPI and M577 armored personnel carriers, which were both based on the American M113. Some of the vehicles were replaced by the Dutch-German Fennek armored vehicle, and the rest were to be replaced by infantry fighting vehicles. The Dutch considered three vehicles: the ASCOD, the Puma, and the export version of the Swedish Stridsvagn 90 (Strf 90). In 2003, the Dutch Army conducted comparative tests of the CV9030 Mk. III and the ASCOD. The military preferred the Swedish vehicle, especially given the prospect of an upgraded CV9035 Mk III variant equipped with a 35mm cannon.
On December 13, 2004, the Dutch Army ordered 184 CV9035NL vehicles and soon expanded the order to 193 units. The vehicles' chassis were built in Sweden and their turrets in the Netherlands. The new IFV was equipped with modern electronics, a more powerful engine than earlier vehicles, and additional modifications for crew comfort. It also had the option of installing Swiss RoofPRO-P and SidePRO-P armor, as well as TACTICS simulators. The first CV9035NL was delivered to the Dutch army on December 15, 2008. Currently, the country has 128 vehicles in service, and the rest were sold to Estonia.
The Dutch CV9035NL was introduced in Update 2.39 "Dance of Dragons" to the French ground research tree. Unlike other vehicles in the CV90 family, this one is equipped with a new 35 mm Bushmaster III autocannon. It is an enlarged version of the 30 mm gun found on the CV9030FIN. The CV9035NL differs from the Danish CV9035DK due to its different armor package and increased weight. In addition to its new gun, the vehicle stands out due to its thermal imager and good mobility. However, it suffers from weak armor and a lack of ATGMs.
