In 1972, Greece ordered 36 new F-4E Phantom IIs. Deliveries began just two years later. In the early 1990s, additional F-4E and RF-4E aircraft were purchased from the Air National Guard and the Luftwaffe. Following the German ICE program, the Greeks also wanted to modernize their aircraft in a similar manner. To this end, on August 11, 1997, a contract was signed between the German company DASA and Hellenic Aerospace Industry to modernize 39 aircraft to the F-4E Peace Icarus 2000 (AUP) standard. The first upgraded aircraft arrived in Greece in December 2002. The AUP modification involved expanding the weapons suite, installing a new AN/APG-65GY radar, a new HUD, and new MFDs, as well as a number of minor electronic upgrades. Starting in 2017, all RF-4Es were withdrawn from service, and the gradual withdrawal of the F-4E (AUP) from service also began. As of 2026, the Hellenic Air Force still uses 16 of these fighters.
The Greek F-4E AUP Phantom II was introduced in Update 2.59 “Sky Odyssey”, as part of the Israeli aviation research tree. In many ways, the Greek fighter resembles the German F-4F KWS LV. Similarly, the now-obsolete Phantom platform does not impress with its speed or maneuverability. The aircraft’s poor flight characteristics are offset only by its good radar and AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles.
