The F-5T SCU (Second Capability Upgrade), also known as F-5T Tigris, was the second modernisation of the American F-5E fighter-bomber by the Thai military. After retiring the F-5A and making minor modifications to the F-5E, the Thai military decided to upgrade the ageing aircraft more comprehensively. In the late 1990s, they enlisted the help of the Israeli company Elbit, which created a design for new cockpit glass, digital multifunction displays (MFDs), a helmet-mounted target designation system, a new radar, and a new rudder. Upgrades to the F-5T Tigris began in 2002, and 18 aircraft were modified. The aircraft were scheduled for decommissioning in the early 2010s; however, due to financial constraints, in 2015 it was decided to upgrade the aircraft to the TSU (Third Capability Upgrade) level, resulting in the F-5TH Super Tigris. The F-5TH is expected to remain in service until the early 2030s.
Introduced in Update "Storm Warning" as part of the Thai sub-tree, the F-5T SCU is an upgraded version of the F-5 fighters, further improving its impressive versatility with new ordnance options. Compared to the related F-5E FCU, the F-5T trades an option to carry additional all-aspect missiles in favour of carrying a pair of deadly AIM-9L all-aspect missiles with improved characteristics over the AIM-9P-4 found on the FCU. In addition, the F-5T features the addition of HMD targeting, allowing the pilot to better take aim at their target.
