Description

The OTOMATIC's turret. The SMA VPS-A06 is the radar at the front.

The SMA VPS-A06 is an Italian ground based target-tracking radar. In game it is found as the main tracking/fire-control radar of the OTOMATIC, fitted alongside the SMA VPS-A05 search radar.

Vehicles equipped with this radar

General info / usage

The SMA VPS-A06 is only a tracking radar, this means it can lock onto targets and provide a firing lead indicator, but cannot by itself detect targets and place them on the radar display. However on the OTOMATIC (the only vehicle which currently uses it), the SMA VPS-A06 is fitted alongside the SMA VPS-A05, target detection radar; this allows the OTOMATIC to use the VPS-A05 radar to detect targets, while the VPS-A06 radar is tracking a target. The VPS-A06 can track targets in a 180-degree arc from the front of the turret, out to a maximum range of 16 km.

Comparison with analogues

Compared to other tracking radars, the SMA VPS-A06 has an average maximum range and a good minimum range. The minimum relative speed is about average. The tracking angles match those of the Tunguska's 1RL144 radar, being slightly worse the Gepard's tracking radar.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Decent maximum range
  • Good minimum range
  • Good minimum relative speed

Cons:

  • Radar cannot track targets through a full 360-degrees
  • Radar tracking angles are slightly narrower than those of the Gepard's tracking radar (another radar which cannot track through 360 degrees)
  • Radar is quite tall and cannot be folded

History

The SMA VPS-A06 was developed in the 1980s by Galileo Avionica S.p.A. (now Selex ES). The radar was designed for use on the OTOMATIC anti-aircraft system. The radar was considered very accurate, reportedly being able to identify a target's location to within 2 m, at a range of 10 km.

Media

An excellent addition to the article would be a video guide, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
