General info

The KV-122 in the garage.

The KV-122 is a premium Rank IV Russian heavy tank with a battle rating of 5.7 (AB/RB) and 6.0 (SB). It was introduced in Update 1.63 "Desert Hunters". It features the body of a KV-85 with a turret mounting a 122 mm cannon found on the IS-2.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

A KV-1 with a 122 mm gun gives the player the play style of a KV-1, but with a firepower of the IS-2. The lower mobility of the KV-1 in comparison to the IS series requires one to be cautious while playing this tank as it would be left vulnerable for a longer time period as the tank retreated back to cover. For the KV-122, being able to hit the target first is the most important aspect of this tank.

Vehicle characteristics

Tactics

Specific enemies worth noting

Most tanks at the battle rating and above can deal with the KV-122 easily due to the relatively low sloping of the frontal armour. Tanks below the 6.0 battle rating may be more lenient, all though it is unlikely. but tanks with high-velocity anti-tank weapons such as the 76 mm gun in the U.S., 17-pounder in the British, and the 75 mm KwK 40 in the Germans should be taken with caution.

Counter-tactics

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • 122 mm cannon, with insane hitting power
  • Somewhat decent turret armour.
  • No cheeks on the hull, allowing the KV-122 to angle unlike the IS-1 and IS-2

Cons:

  • Hull armour of a KV-85, not sufficient against hard-hitting cannons of Rank III/IV
  • Sluggish like a KV-85
  • Long reload
  • In Soviet tradition, the gun depression is bad
