History

The 102/35 mod 14 is a bored-out, short-barrelled variant of the Cannone da 90/53 anti-aircraft gun. One of the most successful anti-aircraft guns of World War II, the 90/53 was developed as a naval dual-purpose cannon used by both the Regio Marina (Royal Italian Navy) and Regio Esercito (Royal Italian Army). Seeking a design for an aircraft for use against ships, the P.108A serie 2 was developed using a modified high-velocity gun to serve in this role. It fired heavier 29 pounder shells compared to the 22 pound shells of the 90/53, had a muzzle velocity of 1,970 feet per second, and a recoil system weighing 3,300 lbs. Mounted longitudinally on the center-line of the fuselage and firing at a depressed angle, the gun generated considerable recoil but this could be absorbed by the 30 ton airframe. It carried 50-60 rounds and was planned to be fitted with a ballistic sight and a 15-16 round belt. In March 1943, the P.108A were tested at Fubara and later Piza performing test firings between 4,900 feet and 14,800 feet to collect ballistic data for the gunsight. However, the changing design requirements and Italian Armistice ended the project in the development stage.
