The M60A1 is an updated version of the American M60 main battle tank, which was produced from 1962 to 1980. It featured a new turret that provided better protection and working conditions for the crew in the fighting compartment, as well as a new AVDS-1790-2A TLAC engine and an improved fire control system (FCS) that included a set of infrared optics. In addition to serving in the United States, the M60A1 was exported to many countries, including Italy. In 1965, the Italian government signed a contract with the United States for the supply of M60A1s, wishing to replace the aging M47 Patton II tanks. The contract included the purchase of 100 vehicles from the United States and the manufacture of an additional 200 locally under license by OTO Melara.
One of the units that received the new M60A1s was the 132nd Armored Division "Ariete" (Italian: 132ª Divisione Corazzata "Ariete"). The division was established in 1939 as the Italian army's first large armored unit. After being defeated in battles in North Africa in 1942, the division was restored and took part in the battles to defend Rome in 1943. However, it was disbanded again after Italy's surrender. Recreated in the postwar period, the division has undergone several transformations and now functions as the 132nd Armored Brigade "Ariete" (Italian: 132ª Brigata Corazzata "Ariete").
The M60A1 "D.C. Ariete" was introduced in Update 1.85 "Supersonic". It differs from the American M60A1 (AOS) in its unique camouflage and lack of a stabilizer. This makes it difficult to shoot while moving, especially since many opponents have a stabilizer. Nevertheless, the tank has decent protection and a good 105mm gun, though its speed could be better.
