The SB 2M-103 (SBbis) was an updated version of the high-speed, front-line bomber, the SB-2 (ANT-40), which was the most mass-produced aircraft developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau. This version featured new M-103 engines with 960 hp, a redesigned navigator's cabin, and a steerable tail wheel. The aircraft could also be equipped with retractable ski landing gear. Its flight tests were conducted from September 1937 to September 1938. On September 2, 1937, M. Alekseev set an official altitude record with a one-ton load on the first SB 2M-103. He climbed to 12,244 meters, and on November 1, he reached 12,692 meters.
The SB 2M-103 was introduced before the beginning of the open beta. This aircraft is best used for bombing. Despite its low rate of climb and poor maneuverability, it is capable of reaching speeds higher than those of pre-war aircraft. It has three ShKAS machine gun turrets that reliably protect the bomber.
