Survivability and armour

  • 5 mm Steel plate under nose gunner
  • 10 mm Steel plate behind the pilot
  • 8 mm Steel plate in front of dorsal gunner
  • 6 mm Steel plate under ventral gunner
  • 8-8.5 mm Steel plates around beam gunner
  • 8 mm steel on top of engines

Armaments

Suspended armament

The He 111 H-16 can carry the following ordinance:

  • 32 x 50 kg SC50JA bombs
  • 8 x 250 kg SC250JA bombs
  • 2 x 1000 kg SC1000L2 bombs
  • 2 x 1000 kg SC1000L2 bombs + 1 x 250kg SC250JA bomb

Defensive armament

The He 111 H-16 can defend itself with:

  • 1 x 20 mm MG FF/M cannon, nose turret (120 rpg)
  • 1 x 13 mm MG 131 machine gun, dorsal turret (1,000 rpg)
  • 2 x 7.92 mm MG 81 machine gun, ventral turret (1,000 + 850 rpg = 1,850 total)
  • 1 x 7.92 mm MG 81 machine gun, 2 x beam turret (500 rpg = 1,000 total)

Usage in battles

In Arcade, try to maximize altitude upon spawning; this will make it harder for most fighters to reach you in the early moments (only for ground strike). However, this leaves your poorly defended underbelly open to most attacks, so a fighter with a decent engine could easily catch up and take you down. When engaging this bomber, don't worry about the gunners, as they have a very restricted field of, allowing attack from these angles: 10-2 o'clock high or even 8 o'clock high/5 o'clock high, as well as 9-3 o'clock low or 10 o'clock low/2 o'clock low, as the gunners cannot reach you there.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Decent bomb load (can carry up to 32 x 50 kg bombs stock) and up to 2250 kg total.
  • Can cope with high altitudes better than British starter bombers.
  • Engine fires do minimal collateral damage by not spreading, but the engine will die.
  • Very good defensive guns (significant improvement over predecessors).
  • Good roll rate by bomber standards.
  • Armour and structural design allow very good resistance to 7.7 mm and somewhat to 12.7 mm bullets.
  • Out classes similar Wellington bombers in nearly every respect.
  • Pilot seat is set farther back than normal, reducing but not eliminating chance of dead pilot.
  • 20mm nose gun can be a nasty surprise to head-on attackers and allows for bomber hunting.
  • Stock payload is highly efficient at carpet bombing tanks, armored cars, AAA, etc.

Cons:

  • Gunner placements restrict effective defense to horizontal plane only, with gaps at 2 and 10 o'clock.
  • As with most bombers (and German planes), poor turning circle which doesn't aid the gunners at all when attacked.
  • Top gunner is limited in effectiveness, due to vertical stabilizer.
  • Stock payload is practically worthless against bases.
  • Very vulnerable when being attacked by multiple fighters, due to lack of many guns.
  • Although resistant to 12.7 mm guns, they will kill you if you don't quickly deal with the threat.

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/ History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === Encyclopedia Info ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
