Description
The MPDR 12 is a German ground based target detection radar. It was designed as the target detection radar for the Gepard; in game it is also used to represent the Type 87's radar performance.

General info / usage
The MPDR 12 is only a search radar, so cannot track targets by itself. However the radar is always fitted alongside the Albis tracking radar; this allows vehicles to use the MPDR 12 radar to detect targets, while the Albis radar is tracking a target. The MPDR 12 provides full 360 degree search coverage out to a maximum range of 16 km.

Comparison with analogues
Compared to other search radars the MPDR 12 has a somewhat lacking maximum range and an about average minimum range. At 16 km, the range falls behind that of the many other search radars, but is better than that of the Marconi S 400. The radar also scans quickly, taking only 1 second to scan through 360 degrees. On top of this the radar also has a good minimum relative speed of only 36 km/h matching that of the Tunguska's 1RL144 radar, and the OTOMATIC's SMA VPS-A05 radar.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Good minimum relative speed
- Scans quickly
Cons:
- Mediocre maximum range
- Mediocre minimum range
History
The MPDR 12 was developed in the 1960s/70s by Siemens, who were contracted to design the fire control system for the Gepard. The MPDR 12 is a E-band radar, Dutch versions of the Gepard used a different fire control system, using a X-band radar.
