General information

The Fw 190 D-9 Langnasen-Dora (German for "Long-Nosed Dora") was a high-altitude variant of the famous German Fw 190 fighter developed by Kurt Tank in 1944. By mid-1942, the main weakness of the Fw 190 A had become apparent: its BMW 801 radial engine lacked sufficient high-altitude performance, making it increasingly difficult to intercept the growing number of Allied heavy bombers. Several projects were launched to equip the Fw 190 with new engines. The most successful project involved the Jumo 213 engine, which was originally developed for bomber aircraft. The resulting Fw 190 D prototypes significantly outperformed the standard A-series fighters and the experimental B and C variants in speed, climb rate, and high-altitude performance, though they were somewhat less maneuverable. Following further development and testing, the Fw 190 D-9, based on the Fw 190 A-9, entered mass production. Between the summer of 1944 and April 1945, approximately 900 aircraft were built. While their performance was comparable to that of their opponents', the Fw 190 D-9s arrived too late to have a significant impact on the air war.

The Fw 190 D-9 was introduced in Update 1.37. The plane features a good flight performance and armament. With its high dive speed, and excellent energy retention this fighter is ideally suited for fast hit-and-run attacks, boom-and-zoom tactics and energy trapping. However, it performs poorly at slow speeds and prolonged dogfights in general, which is made worse by a mediocre climb rate often putting it in disadvantageous positions.
