History

During the inter-war period, the Imperial Japanese Army Technical Bureau sought to replace their Type 11 75 mm anti-aircraft guns from service. The resulting design, created from studies of various foreign anti-aircraft guns, was the Type 88 which used a single piece, partially retractable, barrel with a sliding breech that had five folding legs for stability. It was used by the IJA during their Invasion of Manchuria in 1931, the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars throughout the 1930s, and Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 until 1945 before being used in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The Type 88 had a replacement lined up in the form of the Type 99 88 mm AA gun based on German SK C/30 88 mm naval guns captured in Nanjing in 1937, but the Type 88 would remain the most commonly found artillery piece in the Pacific Theater.

In World War II, the Type 88 was used as not only an anti-aircraft gun, but an anti-tank cannon particularly at the Battle of Okinawa and Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. Towards the end of the war, the Type 88 was mostly used for defending the home islands from B-29 bombers, but lacked the range to attack these high altitude aircraft. To combat the B-29A-BN, The Imperial Japanese Army Air Service mounted the Type 88 to Ki-109 ground attack aircraft. These Ki-109s were assigned from March to July of 1945 to defend Tokyo and Yokohama before spending the final months of the war being tested as an anti-ship platform.
